Who Is Your God?

Exodus 20:3: Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Exodus 20:5b: . . . I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, . . .

An idol is anything or anyone that we put before God, above God, in place of God, between us and God or is more important to us than God.

2 Corinthians 13:5a: Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. . . .

There are many passages, truths and principles in the Bible that can help us examine ourselves. They can help us find out if God is really our God or if we have idols we need to destroy. The one you have faith in is your god. If you have faith in the God of the Bible, He is your God. If you have faith in anyone or anything else, that is your god.

Satan will attempt to put as many things as he can between you and God. He will not mind who your god is as long as your god is not the God of the Bible. He would like to be your god. He would like money or any of many other things to be your god. He would like it if, in a practical sense, you are your own god. Anything or anyone but the God of the Bible. In a very practical sense, when Adam and Eve obeyed Satan, he was their god. In a lesser sense, the forbidden fruit was their god.

When your faith is in the God of the Bible, He will make a difference in every part of your being and every part of your life. He will decide what differences He will make. He is God.

2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Galatians 2:20: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

The one you yield yourself to obey is your god. If you yield yourself to obey the God of the Bible, He is your God. If you yield yourself to obey anything else, that is your god. If you yield yourself to obey yourself, you are your own god.

Romans 6:16: Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

The one you seek with your whole heart is your god. If you seek the God of the Bible with your whole heart, He is your God. If you seek something else with your whole heart, that is your god. If you seek your own benefit, you are your own god.

Jeremiah 29:13: And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

The one you belong to is your god. If you belong to the God of the Bible, He is your God. If you belong to yourself, you are your own god.

Acts 27:23: For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,

The one you glorify is your god. If you glorify the God of the Bible, He is your God. If you glorify some other god, he is your god. If you glorify yourself, you are your own god.

1 Corinthians 10:31: Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

The one whose will you want and ask for is your god. If you want and ask for the will of the God of the Bible, He is your God. If you want your own will, you are your own god.

Matthew 6:10: Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

The one whose advice, counsel and guidance you seek and accept is your god. If you seek those things from the God of the Bible, He is your God. If you seek them anywhere else, the God of the Bible is not your God.

Isaiah 30:1: Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:

The one you believe is most worthy is your god. If you believe the God of the Bible is most worthy, He is your God. If you believe that you yourself are most worthy, you are your own god.

Revelation 4:11: Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

The one you praise is your god. If you praise the God of the Bible, He is your God. If you praise yourself, you are your own god.

Psalm 113:3: From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD*S name is to be praised.

The one you put first is your god. If you put the God of the Bible first, He is your God. If you put yourself first, you are your own god.

Matthew 6:33: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

The one whose word and power you believe in is your god. If you believe in the power of the Bible and the power of God, He is your God.

Matthew 22:29: Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

Isaiah 55:11: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Matthew 28:18: And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

The most destructive false gods are those that keep lost individuals lost. The most harmful false gods for saved individuals are those that keep them from fulfilling God*s plan for their lives.

Ephesians 2:10: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Until November of 1985, I had many false gods that kept me from salvation. Since then I have had many false gods keeping me from God*s will. Thankfully, He is helping me to see them for what they are and helping me to destroy them.
